It’s Been Awhile .....

..... since the last post I made here in November of last year! Anyway, I’ve just returned from my travels and I can’t believe it’s taken a few months – how time flies!

And while I was away:

1. Typhoon Sendong (International Name: Washi) hit Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon and Iligan on the night of December 16. I wasn’t around (Thank God!) to witness it’s wrath (except as seen on international TV and the internet) and the effects it had to the Talakagnons.

2. St Joseph High School celebrated its 2nd Grand Alumni Homecoming last December 28-29 and I have missed a very rare opportunity of a reunion with my batchmates and former schoolmates.

So what will this Blog bring you this year? Well, you’ll just have to watch this space to find out. If you’re a regular follower of Talbuks Cafe, I’d like to welcome you back. Please drop by again soon for more stories and updates on what’s on in Talakag.

RIP: Jocelyn Achas Villegas

It is with deep sadness that I write about the loss of a very dear friend on this blog. Joy, as she is fondly known by fellow Talakagnons, passed away earlier this week. The funeral will be held this Saturday in Talakag.

Joy served the LGU of Talakag, Bukidnon as Budget Officer since the late 1970s until early this year when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.

She will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with the family she left behind at this very difficult time.

Julie’s Bakeshop – Now Open for Business

Julie’s Bakeshop opened its branch in Talakag today. Throughout the day, the bakeshop personnel offered free bread and cake tasting opportunities to the public. In the afternoon, the children and passers-by were entertained by a performance from Julie, the Mascot.

Julie’s Bakeshop occupies part of the ground floor of the recently constructed commercial building owned by Ex-Mayor Amado Noble. This is situated beside Alex Noble’s residence and in the area where St. Benedict’s Pharmacy used to be before it was destroyed by that big fire in 2007.

This new bakeshop will now bring the total number of bakeries operating in Talakag to 8. Well its so obvious that Talakag residents are big bread and cake consumers.

Talakag Central School Library Is Open

This is it! It’s a dream come true for the pupils and teachers of Talakag Central School for they now have a very nice library that is well-stocked with 1,800 books and reference materials. These pupils may be in Talakag physically but they will now have the opportunity to travel in time and explore a different world through reading these books. This much needed school facility has been made possile by the generosity of donors through the BigHoop Charities, Inc. and HELP Foundation’s friends and families.

Today we witnessed the formal hand-over ceremony and opening of the Talakag Central School Library. It was such a news-worthy ocassion for both the school and the town that even ABS-CBN TV crew came to document the event. In attendance were Talakag Central School pupils and teachers, Bighoop Board Members and staff, LGU staff and distinguished guests including Dr Racoma (Bukidnon School Division Superintendent), Dr Ga (Talakag Central School District Superivisor), Mr Urbina (Talakag Central School Principal), Ms Maiatico (BigHoop In-country Director), Mr Felipe Bigcas (BigHoop President), Kagawad Factora, Kagawad Bigcas and Kagawad Taqueban (representatives from the LGU), Father Brigoli (St Joseph Parish Priest) and Pastor Rufino (General PTA President).

Special mention goes to the international guests of honour who travelled all the way from the USA Ms Kathy Parker, Ms Kathy Crosson and Ms Blanch Malankowski Smith. They all worked as US Peace Corps before, just like Ms Gerry Maiatico (mentioned earlier) and Mr Keith Hooper, the Founder of BigHoop Charities, Inc and HELP Foundation. They have volunteered to come to Talakag and worked hard in helping categorise and catalog the books and also in organising the successful library launch. This is also their way of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the US Peace Corps.

Talakag Celebrates Farmers’ Day

For the very first time, Talakag celebrated Farmers’ Day over a 3-day period (August 17-19). The event was organised and sponsored by the Municipal Agriculture Office and the Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries Council. As usual it started with a civic parade, followed by an opening programme and cutting of ribbon to officially declare the event open.

Farmers from around Talakag gathered to exchange experiences and tips on successful farming. They also took the opportunity to attend seminars run by the Municipal Agriculture Office covering topics in line with this year’s theme “Ang Kakugi sa Pag-uma Maoy Pag-laum sa Lungsod”. Plaques of Recognition were awarded to Outstanding Farmers for 2011 while Plaques of Appreciation were given to Agro-Fair Exhibitors. Prizes were also awarded to winners of different game categories. Korean Medical Mission Is Welcomed by Talakag Residents

A Korean group from Bethel Church, Korea were in town to conduct a Medical Mission organised by the Immanuel Mission Mindanao Churches led by Rev Eun Seo. They were assisted by the Local Government Unit.

Talakag residents gathered at the Town Plaza Covered Court to receive free medical and health services from Korean Doctors, Nurses, Surgeons, Dentists, Opticians and Pharmacists. Patients, whilst waiting for their turn, were entertained by Korean musicians, artists and dancers. Activities prepared for the children included balloon modelling, face-painting and picture-framing. Those in need of some pampering only were offered free Korean-style manicures.

There was something for everyone, from consultations, tooth extraction, surgery, free reading glasses and medicines, to free manicures, entertainment and even snacks.

Here’s a big thank you to our new Korean friends and we wish them safe journey back to Korea.

Saint Joseph High School General Alumni Homecoming Set for December 2011

For the Attention of Saint Joseph High School Alumni

SJHS will hold a General Alumni Homecoming over a three-day period in December here in Talakag, Bukidnon. So fellow SJHS alumni please mark your calendars and keep December 27, 28 and 29 free to attend this affair. For those who are now living away from Talakag, please come home for Christmas and take this rare opportunity to meet and reminisce with old SJHS classmates, schoolmates and teachers. The last General Alumni Homecoming was held in 2000 when SJHS celebrated its 50th Anniversary.

The following has been agreed at the recent Alumni Meeting held during the SJHS Foundation Day:

1. A Batch Representative will be appointed to help coordinate activities and disseminate information to its members.

2. Registration fee will be 5,000 pesos per Batch (NOT per person) to help defray some of the expenses for the occasion and raise funds for the school’s concrete fence and gate project.

3. The teams will be colour-coded and comprise the following:

St Joseph High School’s 61st Foundation Day

St Joseph High School is 61 years old today but this is actually the very first time that the school celebrated its Foundation Day. I’m sure this is going to be the first of many. To mark this special occasion, the alumni were invited to join in the celebration. The day started with a mass, followed by a parade around the town. There was a short program at the school’s covered court with presentations from current students, in line with the theme this year “Reminiscing the Wonders of the Earth with Much Thanksgiving”; whilst selected alumni were invited to do the Invocation (Mrs Genelyn Bacarro Macapayag - Batch 98), Pambansang Awit (Mrs Jenelyn Heramis Galgnara - Batch 97), Opening Remarks (Mrs Ginny Alma Laguardia Cabasa - Batch 83) and the “History of St Joseph High School” (Mrs Ma Lourdes Santiago Cunningham - Batch 75).

After the program, the SJHS Alumni Association held a meeting and elected a new set of officers. By far the best part was catching up with old classmates and schoolmates during lunch. The celebrations continued in the afternoon with Sports and Games.

The Last Week of Summer

It’s the last week of summer and my sister Tess and I decided to go for a walk near the Kabalangasan River. We have been walking for a while when we heard children’s excited voices not too far from the road. Out of curiosity we decided to check out the source of such excitement. What we discovered brought back fond memories.

We saw children building playhouses made from whatever materials they could find like banana leaves for roof, old straw sacks and tarpaulins for walls, cardboards for flooring, with bamboo sticks and tree branches holding the house together. Inside, they furnished their playhouse with whatever pieces of junk (like old tires, broken plastic stools, rusty biscuit tins, etc) that they have obviously salvaged from a dump somewhere. They also pretended to prepare a meal out of mud, some leaves and flowers. They did assure us they won’t eat the concoction for real! It was such a pretty sight to see such ingenuity among these children in Talakag that we thought were long gone what with the advent of mobile phones, electronic games, TVs, etc.

The beauty of playing house is that the children can afford to make mistakes and start all over again and to them it is still fun. When they've had enough at the end of the day they can always run to the comforts of their own home and back to the real world with Mum and Dad.

We used to play house ourselves when we were children. We remember it well that no playhouse is complete without play acting. Just like us a long, long time ago, these children get to play roles where one would be the Dad, one the Mum while others would be the children and neighbours, etc and interact like grown-ups. Without realising, they are learning how to run a house and some survival skills as well. This simple summer activity of make believe will certainly help prepare them for what they will become in the future. They will learn (by trial and error) the art of planning, organising, creativity and teamwork in building not only their playhouses but their characters and relationships with others too. Of course, there will be leaders and followers, there will be a bad apple or two (but that’s life) and most of all some friendship will be forged that will last long after the summer is gone.

School starts again next week and these children will leave this summer behind. No doubt that the playhouses they have built will be abandoned and rot in time but the memories will stay. Let’s hope they will learn something new at school and (just maybe) come next summer, they will build or rebuild their playhouses again but with better designs and materials. Perhaps there will be a reversal of roles too – someone else could play Mum or Dad for a change and, of course, another one gets to be the leader or that new kid on the block might even join in.

RIP: Joseph M Borreta 1943-2011

Joseph M Borreta, age 68 and former Mayor of Talakag, suffered a heart attack and died at Madonna Hospital last Saturday, May 21, 2011. His body lies on a public wake at the Borreta’s residence in Talakag. He is survived by wife Alice, son JB, daughters Wewing and Pippa, sons-in-law and grandchildren.

Interment will be on Saturday morning, May 28, 2011 after a short eulogy service at the Municipal Hall at 8:00 a.m. and a funeral service at St Joseph Parish Church.

Pacquiao vs Mosley

Thanks to Congressman Jess Paras, the people of Talakag have once again enjoyed watching a Manny Pacquiao fight. Two back to back giant screens were provided right here in the Plaza Covered Court showing (via satellite) the Pacquiao vs Mosley match live from Las Vegas which ended in a unanimous decision in favour of Pacquiao rather than a knockout.

Cups of hot and nutritious “Chicken and Vegetable Arroz Caldo” were also served to the viewing public.

The election is well over and won so this event was no gimmick but a simple provision of recreation and nutrition for the Congressman’s constituency. A much appreciated gesture indeed so well done Congressman!

Talbuks Cafe Is 3 Years Old

How time flies! Three years on and the struggle continues to provide news and information about “Life in Talakag Today”. Talbuks Cafe is definitely a labour of love.

I am pleased to report that this humble blog has been visited 7,000 times since it started. It has also been instrumental in reuniting (online) some old friends as well as making new friends too. Another Fire in Talakag

Another fire broke out between 11:00 and 11:30 last night in Talakag, just across the Town Plaza and beside the Asian Hills Bank. It is at the corner plot occupied now by the Delaotas but during the 60s/70s by the Macarambons. The fire gutted timber-built commercial establishments including Atty Wilfredo Linaac Law Office; Atty Rochelle Dagaraga Law Office; Gloria Cariton’s Carenderia; an internet cafe; a fruit shop belonging to the Labita family and some buildings that were occupied as residences and boarding houses. Gevic’s Store which is owned by Gemma Pajo narrowly missed the fire. Had it not rained heavily early last night, the fire could have been worst. Fire trucks from the Municipal Fire Department, Dole and Del Monte were at the scene to help tackle the fire.

As of 8:00 this morning, the origin and cause of the fire were still being investigated. One person who rushed back into a burning building to locate a child suffered burns and is being treated at Talakag Medicare Hospital.

It is ironic that the fire happened in the month of March which is the “Fire Prevention Month”. Here are some pictures I took this morning:

Beauty, body and brains definitely run in the family as Naomi Grace Artango Alder (Miss Talakag 2010) handed her crown and title over to her first degree cousin Joyce Artango (Miss Talakag 2011). The Miss Talakag Beauty Pageant was held tonight at the Plaza Covered Court with a formal black and white theme. The stage had a black background with white accent and the candidates paraded in black and white long gowns during the finale.

Park n Go Bakeshop Soon to Open in Talakag

This new bakery is situated just across the Plaza waiting shed. Since this establishment is owned by a Chinese family, I reckon it will open next week in time for the Chinese New Year. While taking photos of the development, you will notice (as indicated in the streamer) that it will be open 24 hours. Given the opening hours, I can see this become a favourite hangout for BSU college students attending evening classes and the Del Monte and Dole plantation people working on shifts. Park n Go Bakeshop will now bring the total number of bakeries operating in Talakag to 7.

Talakag Barangay Officials and SK Chairmen Sworn To Office

The new elected/re-elected Barangay Officials and SK Chairmen from the 29 Barangays of Talakag, Bukidnon took their oath in a ceremony held today in the Town Plaza. All the Municipal Officials led by Mayor Nestor Macapayag were in attendance to formally welcome them to Office. The guest speaker from the Office of DILG Region 10, in his speech, stressed the importance of upholding their duties and responsibilities. This was followed by the Municipal Treasurer’s talk on budgets, audit and accountability.

Congratulations to all Barangay and SK Officials and may you serve the Talakagnons well throughout your tenure.

Bukidnon Bloggers

It’s official - my husband Jim and I are now core members of the newly formed Bukidnon Bloggers. Visit Bukidnon Online to read all about it. We just got back from attending the Blogging 101 and How to Make Money Online Workshop held yesterday, November 6 in Malaybalay City.

We left Talakag in the early hours of the morning to get to Malaybalay on time, given that there were major roadworks along the Manolo Fortich stretch. The traffic wasn’t too bad and driving through the mist in the Impasugong area reminded us of being back in Scotland. We arrived in Malaybalay at 7:00am and went straight to Haus Malibu to check in and for some breakfast.

Then off we went to Sir Edwards Grill, the venue for the Blogging 101 and How to Make Money Online Workshop. We were met by Irene, the lady behind Bukidnon Online and responsible for organising the event. The registration fee of 200 pesos was really worth it – workshop with free flowing coffee, 2 snacks and lunch. There were surprises in between topics like raffle prizes won from various sponsors. Jim (for being 1st to register) won a keychain from Google. We also got the chance to try some chocolate cake from Mariela’s Bakeshop of Valencia City (the best chocolate cake in Bukidnon). But the big surprise came in the form of a video message from Senator Francisco Pangilinan.

The event was well attended – around 40 (from students, teachers, businessmen, bankers, government employees, to retirees, etc) including the CDO Bloggers who gave the lectures and shared their experiences. The workshop was informal yet very informative and interesting. The lecturers were fun and engaging and they were not even bothered when they found out that I was the only one there without a Facebook account! Oh well, I prefer Blogging (in my defense).

At the end of a long day, we were googled, bookmarked, tagged, flickered, facebooked, twittered, adsensed, zoomed, paypalled, etc. We all left after “picture, picture”, exchanges of contact details, promises to text, email, chat or check each other out in the social media, and truly inspired to start up or update our respective Blogs and promote Bukidnon along the way.

This is my first Barangay Election experience, having left Talakag and lived abroad for over 25 years. I went to my voting centre early to avoid the rush. Unlike the Big Election held last May, the Barangay Election was very quiet and basic. The ballot was like a ¼ sheet of blank bond paper and I had to write down the candidates’ names. Even if PCOS Machines were not being used, I (at least) expected all the candidates names preprinted on the ballot and all I had to do was tick the corresponding boxes. I went back to the voting centre later in the afternoon to observe and get the results first hand. Again the process was very basic with someone tallying on the blackboard with a piece of chalk. It was like going back in time!

Fire in Talakag Left Families Homeless

The fire started from the house owned by Mr Julio Suclatan at 11:00 last night. By midnight the fire gutted 13 houses in Barangay 3 just across the Talakag Community Hospital. Due to the houses built so close together and some LPG tanks exploding, the fire spread very quickly. Fire trucks from the Municipal Fire Department, Dole and Del Monte were at the scene to help tackle the fire. People were taken by surprise and so were not able to save many of their personal effects. As of this posting, nobody was reported hurt and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

110th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary Celebration in Talakag

Talakag civil servants kicked off the 110th Philippine Civil Service Month celebration with a parade around the town. This was followed by the Opening of the Sports Festival that will run throughout September involving employees working in the government from the municipal, provincial and national offices.

Suspects Allegedly Responsible in the Killing of Mr Roland Buhler Are Now in Custody

THREE of the six suspects identified in the killing of a German national surrendered at the Talakag Municipal Police Office following the arrest of their mastermind.

Noel Balighot, special investigator III of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in Northern Mindanao, identified the suspects as Dennis Tuto, a resident of San Antonio in Talakag, Bukidnon; Ronnie Fabre, a resident of Barangay Carmen, this city, and a minor who is also a resident of San Antonio.

Balighot, who handled the case, said the three surrendered last Friday after several operations conducted by NBI and Talakag Police Station.

"The mastermind, identified as Glen Tuto, was arrested in Libona, Bukidnon in connection with a standing warrant of arrest issued against him for illegal possession of firearms in Cebu," Balighot said.

Glen and Dennis are cousins and both were native of Talakag, Bukidnon.

The four suspects were allegedly responsible in the killing of Roland Richard B. Buhler, a German national who married a Filipina. He was killed on May 24, 2010 inside his house in Barangay 3, Poblacion, Talakag Bukidnon.

The NBI said the alleged suspects carted away at least P3,000 from the victim. Balighot said Buhler's wife, Venus, was in Cagayan de Oro purchasing various stocks for their hardware and mini grocery store when the incident happened.

"The victim died of strangulation because the suspects tied his neck. They also beat him," Balighot added.

Fabre and Tuto are now detained at the Talakag Police Station while the minor suspect is placed under the custody of his grandmother with the supervision and agreement of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Northern Mindanao.

Three years ago, I made a personal commitment to help put up a library for Bukidnon State University – Talakag Campus in order to provide learning resources to our local college students. I also wrote an article in the Mindanao Blog about my “Library Project for Talakag”. I am pleased to report that the library has now got a fair selection of books available to both students and lecturers.

Again, thanks to my colleagues at Durham University Business School and personal friends back in the UK for donating more books. Photo below shows the handover of the latest consignment of books to Mr Carlos Canlas, a lecturer representing BSU. Degree courses being offered in Talakag are Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Education.

June 15, 2010 is the official start of the new school year in the Philippines. Contrary to rumours that Bethany Christian School in Talakag is closing, I was actually there today to witness the schoolchildren march back to their classrooms for another year of learning. Sadly, it is true that the school has obstacles, particularly financial. However, the sacrifices and hard work put in by Bethany staff, volunteers and donors to keep the school open is admirable. Well done guys!

Talakag Mourns the Death of Mr Roland Buhler

Last Monday afternoon, 24th May, a robbery that went horribly wrong in Talakag resulted in the brutal death of Mr Roland Buhler. Mr Buhler, 58 years old and a German national, who considered Talakag his home for the last 15 years also owned a motorcycle spare parts shop and a sari-sari store. He is survived by his wife Venus Buhler (formerly Carangian), daughter Shirley Ann and son-in-law Mohammed Canlas.

Everyone here is so shocked and alarmed that a crime of this nature has happened in this small quiet town of Talakag. As of this posting Thursday, police and NBI authorities continue to investigate the incident and the identities of the suspects.

Election – The Results for Talakag

It’s the day after the election and the Board of Canvassers and COMELEC Officials continue to consolidate votes being transmitted from more precincts. Finally, the last transmittal came through at 1:15 this afternoon. Shortly after, the Summary of Total Results for Talakag was generated electronically. Election 2010 – A Historical One

Today I witnessed the Philippine’s first ever election votes being automatically tabulated by PCOS machines. I went back to the Talakag Voting Center at 7:00 tonight as the precincts officially closed to see how the new system works. You can also follow the process through the photos below.

Everything went almost smoothly, except that the modems were either very slow or not working during the electronic transmission of the results to SB Legislative Building where the Board of Canvassers and the COMELEC Officials are consolidating all results. This resulted delays of 2 to 5 hours in announcing the official results per precinct.

As of 11:00 tonight, only 50 percent of the whole Talakag precincts have successfully transmitted their results to the Center. However, compared to previous elections, this is still a record! Watch out for the complete official results here tomorrow.

I arrived the Talakag Poblacion Voting Center at 7:15 this morning and it's raining! I thought I was early but the place was already buzzing with people outside their respective precincts waiting for their turn to vote. The whole voting procedure took me about 45 minutes in total - these included waiting, signing in, collecting, filling, feeding the ballot paper into the PCOS machine, verification, and thumbprint. I was the 40th voter of the day. Just to give you an idea of te Election Day here in Talakag today, please see photos below.

Election Campaigns Wrap Up

Finally, the three months of intense campaigning will officially end at midnight. Hurray! No campaigning is allowed tomorrow (Sunday) in order to allow a cooling-off period before the polls on Monday, May 10. What a relief - the politicians and their campaign jingles are beginning to annoy me.

I’m tapping my fingers on the table (or anything), anxiously waiting for it all to be over. I must admit I’ve got mixed feelings about this election. I can’t wait for the day after tomorrow and find out who wins. Candidates to watch out for in Talakag are:

Jess Paras (the new “kid” on the block) for Congressman against incumbent Congressman Pancrudo.

Ex-mayor Amado Noble, Sr (Mayor Nestor Macapayag’s brother-in-law) for Vice-Mayor under the Nationalista Party against incumbent Vice-Mayor Sulatan who is also Mayor Macapayag’s running mate under the Lakas Kampi CMD Party.

There are also fresh and new candidates running for Sanguniang Bayan posts. It’s a case of who’ll get in and who’ll get dropped from the old incumbents.

All eyes will also be on the new Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) voting and counting machines (being used for the first time) to see if they will work without a glitch. As the race to deliver these machines with the correct memory cards to precincts all over the country, I can confirm that Talakag Poblacion (comprising 5 barangays) already received and tested theirs yesterday (see photo below).

I’ve been informed that there will be three Board of Election Inspectors in each precinct to oversee the voting procedures. Priority numbers will also be issued to help control the flow of voters in Talakag Central School.

So all we have to do now is get to the polling stations on Monday, vote and wait (fingers crossed!)

New Priest Ordained in Talakag

Today, St Joseph Church in Talakag was packed with local parishioners and visitors to witness a very special occasion where the new Reverend Fr. Felix Aparicio, Jr. was ordained by Bishop Honesto Pacana. Fr. Aparicio’s family used to live in Barangay 4 in one of the “Blu-K” units owned by the Nobles. The family later moved to join some relatives in San Isidro.

Talbuk’s Café Is Two Years Old Today!

When I was living abroad, I longed for news and updates about Talakag. So I thought when I retire back in Talakag why not create a definitive source of news and information about “Life in Talakag Today”. Hence the birth of Talbuk’s Café, a virtual hang-out where fellow “taga-Talakag”, friends and visitors can stop by anytime (from wherever they may be) and catch up with what’s going on in Talakag.

That was two years ago. How time flies! Now I’m pleased that Talbuk’s Café has gained a considerable number of followers here and abroad. I have met so many people (online) who made this endeavour worthwhile. I have even reunited some friends (online) who have lost touch for a long time. It’s amazing what the internet technology can do nowadays!

Two Senators and a Governor

It’s not very often that one gets a chance to be in the company of two Senators and a Governor. So when you do, you make the most of it. At the recent Kaamulan Street Dancing Competition 2010 in Malaybalay City, we had the opportunity to watch the performance from the VIP Stage and get “up close and personal” with Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri and, his father, Bukidnon Governor Jose Ma. Zubiri and, their Guest of Honor, Senator Loren Legarda (Vice Presidential Candidate).

When people all around you are talking about who is the best candidate, it can be confusing at times. So it pays to get to know as much as possible about as many candidates as you can and match them with your own personal criteria.

The fact that the Zubiris (LAKAS CMD KAMPI) and Legarda (Nacionalista) appeared side by side doesn’t surprise me. I don’t think it matters anymore what Party each candidate belongs to. Afterall, people nowadays vote for “the person” and not the Party.

In politics, loyalties can be switched easily in favour of self-interest. So voters pick and choose well and …..

Campaign Period for the Local Polls Kicks Off

At the start of the 45-day election campaign for local candidates, I was woken up by Jess Paras’ jingle “Nobody, nobody but Jess” being played at the Plaza at the crack of dawn! Gosh, does this guy never sleep?

Jess Paras, who is seeking a seat in Congress, has certainly been real busy today. He held his first proclamation rally in Talakag tonight with “thousands” of supporters in attendance (some coming the other 7 Municipalities comprising Bukidnon’s 1st District, namely: Baungon, Libona, Malitbog, Manolo Fortich, Sumilao, Kalilangan and Pangantucan). Jess was accompanied by his family on stage as he shared his vision and enumerated his 10-point priority list for District 1. Jess’ speech was concluded with a fireworks display followed by a variety show featuring local talents.

I found it interesting to witness such occasion again after years of absence from Talakag because my last election campaign experience here was way way back in the 70s.

Miss Divine Grace G. Sabang Bags the Miss Talakag 2010 Title

MAVEMPCO’s Candidate No. 6, Miss Divine Grace G. Sabang was crowned Miss Talakag 2010 at the Pageant tonight. She also won minor awards, including Best in Talaandig Costume, Miss Sunsilk and Miss Close-Up Smile. Her prizes included 20,000 pesos cash, a trophy, bouquet of flowers and Body Line Gift Certificate. She also automatically became a Negros Navigation Princess and was awarded a trophy, bouquet of flowers and a Round Trip ticket for 2 to any destination in the Philippines served by Negros Navigation.
Miss Talakag 1st Runner-up is Stanfilco Dole Philippines’ Candidate No. 7, Miss Naomi Grace A. Allder was awarded prizes including 15,000 pesos cash, a trophy, bouquet of flowers and Body Line Gift Certificate. Miss Allder also won special awards, including Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic, and minor awards, including Miss Ponds, Miss Vaseline and Best in Fun Wear.

Miss Talakag 2nd Runner-up is Department of Education’s Candidate No. 1, Miss Nona Fe O. Simene was awarded prizes including 10,000 pesos cash, a trophy, bouquet of flowers and Body Line Gift Certificate. Miss Simene also won the Miss Talent special award and minor awards, including Best in Swimwear and Best in Long Gown.

Diether Ocampo Wows Linggo Ng Talakag 2010

Marne Amoguis (Mayor Macapayag’s daughter) called me this morning inviting me to come round the Municipal Hall as a VIP in the person of Diether Ocampo, an actor/celebrity, is making a courtesy call to the Mayor’s Office. I thought “WHO”? It's now obvious that I’ve been away from the Philippines too long that I don’t even recognize any of the new actors/singers/celebrities post the 1990s.

Anyway, Diether Ocampo made a surprise appearance in Talakag today to the delight of his fans. Diether and his party accompanied by Fr. Kits had lunch with Mayor Macapayag before traveling up to Miarayon to visit a Foundation he helped put up to build a school for the children of Indigenous People. How remarkable!

Grand Opening of Linggo Ng Talakag 2010

Linggo Ng Talakag 2010 officially opened today. It started with a traditional Bukidnon “Pamuhat” at the crack of dawn which unfortunately I missed because I slept in. Then a parade followed at 8:00am which was headed by a motorcade and the Kaamulan dancers, followed by government agencies, civic organisations, schools, and private companies. So many joined the parade; they almost outnumbered the spectators.

After the Opening Program at the plaza, with presentations from the Kaamulan dancers and the schools, the Agro Fair was officially opened by Congressman Pancrudo with “Cutting of the Ribbon” assisted by Mayor Macapayag. I was a bit disappointed that almost half of the Agro Booths/Stalls were still empty by this time. For the rest of the Booths/Stalls that opened for business, not much there either.

A Booth/Stall worth visiting today was the Tourism Booth that displayed Mrs. Flora dela Torre’s traditional Bukidnon costumes and accessories made with beads, coins and bells; the Indigenous People’s Banig mats and bags; Miarayon Pure Coffee; and, of course, the Talakag One Town One Product (OTOP) Carrot Juice.

Another busy Booth/Stall today was the BIGHOOP Livelihood Projects run in conjunction with HELP Foundation by Mr. Keith Hooper with his wife Pat Bigcas. Their products included Kambingan, Barbecue and Handicrafts.

The candidates for Miss Talakag 2010 were also on parade. I later caught up with them at the Municipal Hall while they were rehearsing a dance number they will perform later this week.

Talakag Fans Cheered as Manny Pacquiao Beat Joshua Clottey in Texas

Once again the general public of Talakag were able to witness today "live" via satellite the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight. Thousands gathered in the Plaza Gym and all eyes were glued to the two giant screens that were set up back to back. They jumped with joy and their cheers were deafening at the end when “Pacman” retained his World Boxing Welterweight Title after 12 rounds.

Thanks to Jess Paras for sponsoring the event. Jess and his wife were in attendance and watched amongst their fellow Talakagnons. His friends/supporters also distributed cardboard fans, baseball caps and even served chicken/rice soup for snacks. Such gestures I’m sure, amidst the political campaign period, will help him garner potential votes. As you may already know, Jess is running for Congressman for District 1 – Bukidnon in May.

Kaamulan 2010 Update: Third Time Unlucky for Talakag

Last January, I wrote about Talakag’s preparations for the Kaamulan Festival 2010. As you may already know, Talakag has already placed 2nd twice in previous Kaamulan Ethnic Street Dancing competitions. Well last Saturday, we were in Malaybalay to watch them compete again. Sadly they’ve been unlucky in their third attempt. The competition was really tough and no matter how hard the Talakagnons tried, their best was just not enough (this time) from the judges’ perspective anyway.

However, let us not lose sight of what Kaamulan really stands for; the opportunity to “gather (and feast) with the seven hill tribes of Bukidnon”. After all, it’s the participation that counts and winning is just a bonus. Kaamulan 2010 has come and gone. So Talakagnons, don't despair. “Live to fight another day” and better luck next time.

Dole’s Cabarosak Park

Talakag has now got a Park, thanks to Dole who built it for its workers and opened it to the public as well. Cabarosak Park is located on top of a hill, in the midst of the Dole Banana Plantation in the Malinao area of San Isidro, not too far away from the Dole Packing Station. If it’s going to be your first visit, take someone who’s actually been there before to guide you as the Park is not well signposted. Beware as you could easily get lost amongst the vast hectares of banana trees. Have a look at the photos I’ve posted here and you’ll see what I mean.

Cabarosak Park is built on 3 levels. On the first level, you’ll find the parking area, the entrance, the picnic huts, a barbecue area, toilet facilities, the hanging bridge crossing over a creek, a water fountain, a fish pond and botanic garden. On the second level is the Dining Hall which is screened from mosquitoes and flies. It has bamboo seats, tables and even washing facilities. On the third level, you’ll find a play area with swings, see-saw and monkey bar for the children to enjoy. There’s also a 4-storey view deck that provides a spectacular 360-degree views around Talakag, including the sky, mountains, farms and banana trees as far as your eyes can see.

For a while Cabarosak Park was our best kept secret as we wanted to keep the place to ourselves. It’s a nice and quiet place to enjoy a picnic, read a book, or even a short siesta. Jim and I love going up there during the week (weekends can be crowded nowadays). In as much as I love showing my friends and visitors around Talakag, I have only just recently started to share Cabarosak Park with them. After this post, I doubt whether it’s going to be our best kept secret for long.

Talakag Prepares for Kaamulan Festival 2010

At the Plaza this week, the drums are out and, after rigorous screening and elimination process, over a hundred selected participants have been dancing to the Talaandig beat. This grueling preparation will continue for the next 6 weeks under the keen eye of the Val Lozada who has choreographed Talakag to 2nd Place, twice in a row (2004 and 2007). 3rd time lucky? Let’s keep our fingers crossed for 1st Place this year when Talakag will again be a contingent for the Kaamulan Festival Ethnic Street Dancing Competition to be held on the 6th of March.

Kaamulan Festival is the annual gathering of the Seven (7) Hill Tribes of Bukidnon (the Bukidnon, Manobo, Matigsalug, Talaandig, Higaonon, Umayamnon, and Tiguahanon) in the capital Malaybalay City. For a complete Kaamulan Festival 2010 schedule of activities visit Bukidnon Online.

Christmas Spirit in Talakag

The Christmas lights are now on display at the Plaza and the Municipal Hall in Talakag every night. Very soon all the trees around the Plaza will be decorated and lit as each Barangay and some Business Establishments join the Annual Christmas Tree Decoration Contest. It’s nice to see so many people going out and strolling around the Plaza in the evenings and meeting up with friends amidst the bright and colourful display. A far cry from the old Talakag since it wasn't until the early 1970s that the town started to have electricity.

If you are thinking about visiting or coming home to Talakag, plan to be here around the 22nd of December when the Municipal Carol Singing and Lantern Contests will be held. However, I have yet to get confirmation whether there will be similar contests at Barangay level.

A Tribal Hall in Talakag

We were on our way to Bethany when we passed a group of people gathered and dressed in their colourful traditional Bukidnon attire. We were curious so we stopped and asked if we could take some pictures.

Datu Linggian Modesto B. Pocol, Jr. (who happened to be an old schoolmate) kindly explained what was going on. It turned out that there was a Tribal Wedding going on. We were excited as this was real and not a performance put on for visitors. The rituals, the music and the dances were indeed mesmerizing.

The venue was the Tribal Hall and as you can see it is still under construction. The land it sits on was kindly loaned by the Nobles (a very well-known family in Talakag); however, they need help to complete the construction of the Hall itself. Any donations, financial or in kind (nails, paint, cement, hollow blocks, etc), would be gratefully received.

Datu Linggian and two other Senior Tribal Elders explained why this Tribal Hall means so much to them. It would help preserve their culture and provide a common meeting place where they can learn skills; run basic education classes; and learn to integrate into society which would greatly contribute to the peacekeeping process that is so vital to an area besot with conflict. Likewise, visitors or anyone who is interested can also drop by the Tribal Hall anytime and learn more about the Tribes in Talakag.

Firepower in Talakag: Pacquiao vs. Cotto

The people of Talakag may not have been able to travel to Las Vegas, USA to watch the Pacquiao vs. Cotto boxing match but, thanks to Jess Paras, the general public were able to witness today via satellite how Pacman stopped Cotto at 55 seconds of the 12th round right here in Talakag.

Jess Paras is running for Congressman for our District in Bukidnon in the 2010 elections. What a way to launch his candidacy to a wider audience by sponsoring this show here in Talakag and I must admit that the gesture was impressive. A smart promotional strategy for Jess indeed and his contenders better think fast of something smarter to beat this one.

“Kalag-kalag” in Talakag

Just been to the cemetery to celebrate “kalag-kalag” (All Souls Day) and remember the lives of our beloved relatives and friends who have passed on. Saturday has been spent clearing around the graves and painting the tombs. Yesterday and today we went back to light candles, offer flowers and prayers.

When I left Talakag to go abroad, my father was still alive and even before that we always went to celebrate “kalag-kalag” in Cagayan de Oro where most of our relatives who have passed on were buried. So this is really my first “kalag-kalag” in Talakag.

For two days, Talakag cemetery was full, glowing and lively. You bump into so many people you haven’t seen for a long time. There’s a party atmosphere with people singing, playing, eating and drinking. Across the cemetery and under the shade of the rubber trees, vendors set up selling flowers, candles and refreshments. Barriers were set up at both ends of the cemetery to provide pedestrian only areas while the PNP were around to keep the peace and order. I must confess it’s no different from celebrating in Cagayan de Oro, except that I think Talakag is a lot cooler, less crowded and more organised.

Obituary - Danilo Flores Santiago

My brother, Danilo Flores Santiago, died 23rd July 2009 at the age of 44 while in Maria Reyna Hospital, Cagayan de Oro City, after a short illness. We held his funeral service today 1st August 2009 in Talakag Baptist Church followed by internment at the Santiago Memorial Garden.

Danny was born on 6th August 1964 in Cagayan de Oro City to Gloria and Ferminito Santiago, and brother to Tess, Lulu, Carlos, Junior, Leo and Julie. He was married to Rosalyn Imperio and they raised 2 sons, Winston and Robinson.

“Danny was one of the kindest people you could ever meet and he will be sorely missed.”

RIP: Mr Alfredo Tampo

Mr Alfredo Tampo died suddenly last Sunday after suffering a heart attack in the Plaza, Talakag, Bukidnon. After an overnight wake in Barangay 1 Hall, his body was transferred to Malaybalay City where the funeral was held today. He will be sorely missed by his Talakag friends, work colleagues and students.

Acrobatic Show in Talakag

Thousands came to watch the “New Millennium Acrobatic Show” in the Gym, Talakag Public Plaza during the Valentine’s Weekend. The group is normally based in Baguio City but is currently on tour around the country. Mr Randil F. Villajuan, the instructor/manager, promised to put on the “best show for the family” for only 20 pesos per person. True to his word, the performers delivered and featured different acrobatic formations. Clowns with their usual tricks entertained the crowd during intervals.

I thought that the balancing acts were very good. What made them more thrilling was the absence of safety nets. They were so daring that some people were willing the acrobats not to fall; while others were shouting for more stunts. A child behind me was praying loudly “Oh God! Please keep them safe” and another woman said that she could feel her toes curling under her chair hoping that such act would help the acrobats concentrate and cling on the tight rope. The danger factor certainly kept the crowd’s attention.

By 11:00 pm the show was over and everyone left (on foot, on bicyles or aboard trisikads, motorelas, trucks, vans, jeepneys, etc) with their own stories to tell. When in Talakag, you can’t help but go along to public entertainment (such as this) as part of your social engagements, otherwise you would miss out on what everyone is talking about. Of course, I was there! It was full house. My advice for the future events like this is get there early and bring your own chair. Also position yourself well away from the entrance as late comers tend to push themselves in and can block your view.

Seno and Baiting Wedding

Sherwin Seno (son of Mr. Wilfredo D. Seno and Mrs. Susan D. Seno) married Cynthia Mae Baiting (daughter of the late P/Supt. Amilhamja M. Baiting and Mrs. Nemesia B. Baiting) last month in San Antonio de Padua Parish Church, Nazareth Cagayan de Oro City. The wedding reception was held in Pearlmont Inn, Limketkai Drive, Cagayan de Oro City.

Congratulations to the newly weds and best wishes for your future together.

It is worth noting that Cynthia Mae’s older sister, Amiliza, has traveled all the way from Abu Dhabi to be her Maid of Honor.

We were pleased to have been invited to the wedding of Sherwin and Cynthia Mae, children of very close friends. This occasion also enabled me to be reunited with other long lost friends that I haven’t seen for ages. Don’t you just love weddings?

Christmas and New Year in Talakag

First of all I would like to apologise to everyone, who have been following Talbuks Cafe, for failing to update this Blog regularly as promised. For the last three months I have been busy organising our relocation back to Talakag. Finally we have arrived (yeheyyyy!) and starting to settle into rural living.

Yes I know! - Christmas and New Year celebrations are well over - but I couldn’t get back into blogging again without sharing my observations of Christmas and New Year in Talakag as a returning resident. Better late than never - so please bear with me.

The Catholic church bells ringing early in the morning for the nine days of “misa de gallo” have now been replaced by very loud music (I think it’s by Jose Marie Chan but I’m not sure). As I live quite close to the plaza, this is something that I will have to get used to.

Nowadays the Christmas Basketball League is played in the newly built covered Gym in the Plaza - so the games can go on rain or shine! The players seem to be taller than I can remember. What are they feeding these youngsters nowadays? I believe the winning team was Miarayon.

The Christmas Carol Singing Contest is getting really serious - with professional trainers hired for music and choreography, even the judging criteria has become tougher than ever. The winners were from Barangay 2, who also won it last year. As for the Christmas Lantern Contest, the entries are getting more creative and the designs becoming bolder.

One thing new to me this time is the Christmas Tree Decoration Contest. The trees around the Plaza were decorated with various lights, lanterns and other trimmings of different colours and sizes. What a sight!

New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Plaza started with a Dance Contest, followed by a Fancy Dress Contest and then by midnight - a loud and colourful Fireworks Display (courtesy of the Mayor and LGU) was witnessed by a cheering crowd. Nowadays, the sounds of firecrackers seem normal. These were forbidden in the celebrations that we have awhile back in the 80’s - one could end up in prison if caught in the act. How times have changed!

Growing Papaya Commercially in Talakag

Papaya is a fruit that has always been taken for granted just because it is abundant and easy to grow. They are commonly consumed as fruits for dessert or as vegetables (while still green) for various recipes in tinolas, achara, etc. I believe even its leaves and seeds have medicinal properties. While usually grown from our humble backyard gardens, nowadays they are commercially grown in Talakag, Bukidnon as profitable enterprise too. So far, I have only visited two papaya plantations here in Talakag (one is in San Antonio just a stone’s throw away from the Kabalangasan river, while the other is in San Roque just across Bethany Christian School) but they are fast becoming a popular venture. Not only is commercial papaya fruit a key ingredient for canned fruit cocktails and preserves; concentrates for juice and smoothies; but in the last decade has become a vital raw material for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Just Passing Through

Truckloads of army were seen in Talakag this week. No cause for alarm though – they’re just passing through and on their way to patrol and secure the Bukidnon boundaries in the aftermath of the recent attacks in Lanao del Norte and North Cotabato by the MILF.

Bukidnon Online News also reported last week that:

“The Provincial Board of Bukidnon has recently passed a resolution protesting the inclusion of one of Bukidnon's barangays (Barangay Pamotolan in Kalilangan) in the proposed territory of the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE).

The Supreme Court has issued a temporary restraining order against the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).”

The Bukidnon towns of Talakag, Kalilangan and Pangantucan borders Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur and North Cotabato respectively. So it is indeed understandable why it's important to have a visible army presence around these areas.

Hydroelectric Power Plant in Talakag

In two years time, Talakag could be responsible for lower electricity prices in the region. Oh really?

This is because “the Northern Mindanao Electric Cooperatives (Normeca) is looking at the construction of a 132 megawatt Bulanog-Batang Hydroelectric Power Plant in Talakag, Bukidnon to sustain stable power supply in the region”. SunStar CDO News

Well let's look at the pros and cons:

A hydroelectric power station is clean and does not release greenhouse gases like coal or gas burning power stations. It’s also reliable and it’s easy to generate electricity. The construction project will provide employment opportunities for Talakag residents. Once the dam is built, it produces electricity cheaply.

“Once this project is realised, it would result to low electricity prices because it is stipulated in the law that we don't have to pay VAT for renewable energy”. SunStar CDO News

However, building a big dam is very expensive and can cause lots of disruption to the environment. Some local families may be displaced. The project could also have huge maintenance costs during operation.

On the one hand, there are concerns for potential flooding while on the other, “the Oro Rafters Association feared that the project’s dam operation might result in the reduction of the volume of water flowing into the Cagayan de Oro River that might adversely affect the operation of their popularly and world-class adventure activities as river rafting, kayaking, tubing, among others”. Does the end justify the means? This will depend not only on the management of the project itself but also the subsequent operations of the hydroelectric power plant after its completion and its maintenance long after the construction team have gone. So watch this space!

The Distinctive Character of the Traditional Bukidnon Women’s Dress

I was at the recent Philippine Festival held in Stockton-on-Tees (England), where all Filipinos were encouraged to wear traditional Filipiniana outfits. This normally means that men wear barong tagalogs and the women wear mestiza (or terno) dresses to help promote the Philippine tradition and culture. As I am from Talakag, Bukidnon, I decided to wear a traditional Bukidnon dress to help promote the province of Bukidnon in Mindanao.

I was overwhelmed by the attention I got when I arrived at the venue. Lots of people wanted to take my photograph. They were interested in my Bukidnon attire. One particular British woman said to me, “I recognised the (mestiza) dress that the others are wearing because I saw Imelda Marcos in it but not this one”. I explained that it’s a traditional dress from the province of Bukidnon in Mindanao and fortunately, I was close to the Philippine Embassy’s Tourism booth and I pointed out the island of Mindanao from the map on display. But what really surprised me and I didn’t expect it at all was that even a number of fellow Filipinos who were at the festival didn’t know where Bukidnon is (some thought it’s in Baguio, while others thought it’s in Palawan) nor were they aware of the existence of the traditional Bukidnon dress. This is what prompted me to write about it here.

The traditional Bukidnon women are remarkable for their most colourful dress. They use dyes acquired from plants and trees and typical combination of colours used by the tribes in Bukidnon are red, black and white. They are renowned for their elaborate use of embroidery, appliqué and beadwork. They wear pleated and voluminous skirts of brightly embroidered material. Their skirts are held together by decorative belts with extra embroidered or beaded material hanging on each side of the hips. Their jackets are made of bright material stitched together like patchwork with geometric designs from different bright coloured materials.

With their hair combed back, held by headbands with tassels of red or yellow yarn and the ends tied in a bun, they wear fan-shaped headdresses made of bamboo sticks or rattan covered with material and decorated with beads, shells and feathers. Their jewellery includes beaded earrings, bright multi-coloured bracelets, rings and anklets with tiny bells attached to them, making musical sounds as they walk. They also wear layers of necklaces made of beads, seeds, shells and old coins.

The amount of time and work that goes with the creation of their outfit is priceless. Every material, colour, bead, shell, coin, feather is detailed to represent some aspect of their inner selves. The beauty of the Bukidnon women is always complemented by the style of the traditional dress they wear, specifically designed to show their great pride, dignity and the great characteristics of their tribe and their people.

The traditional Bukidnon dress is now only worn on special occasions like weddings, during the fiestas and Christmas seasons or in shows put on for visitors. My Bukidnon dress (complete with accessories) was specially made by Mrs Flora dela Torre who is a retired elementary school teacher and resident of Barangay 2, Talakag, Bukidnon. I heard she was asked to make one for President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo when she visited Talakag last year. So the next time you're in Talakag why not have one made for yourself and help promote Talakag, Bukidnon. And if you want to catch the biggest parade of colourful traditional Bukidnon costumes from different tribes, come to Bukidnon’s Kaamulan Festival (the social gathering), held in Malaybalay during the month of March each year.

Talakag Has Gone Bananas

Bananas have been grown in Talakag, Bukidnon for a very long time either for consumption by farmers or for sale in the local markets. They constitute a major staple food for Filipinos. Depending on the variety, they can be eaten fresh, boiled, fried, barbecued, chipped or baked.

Nowadays, the Cavendish variety of bananas are grown big time in Talakag by Del Monte and Dole (and their partners) for export as they are among the most widely consumed foods in the world. When you pass the barrio roads of San Isidro, San Antonio and Sto Nino now, you can see so many bananas planted as far as your eyes can see.

According to scientific research, a banana is known to give an instant boost of energy. It is also known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier. No wonder that the “simple living, bisag saging, basta loving” is a famous quote that many families often use when confronted by the hardships of poverty. It is indeed remarkable how far some families are prepared to live on bananas alone as long as they have love.

However, the need to go for such extreme sacrifices is now history since the arrival of Del Monte and Dole have provided employment for many residents of Talakag. Some locals have even found other enterprising ways of augmenting their income by utilising reject bananas. Along the roadside between Talakag and Cagayan de Oro City, a common sight now would be the groups of men, women and children slicing bananas into chips and drying them under the sun, which are then sold on to be made into fertilizers and animal feeds. Hey, isn’t that great?

On the other hand, there are others who have mixed feelings about such big scale banana farming in Talakag. They are concerned about what future relative effects the strong chemicals in fertilisers and pesticides being used might bring to the workers and the families who live beside the plantations, to the nearby streams, rivers and wildlife, and to small-scale farmers around.

So what does the future hold for Talakag? As landowners have leased their land to Del Monte and Dole for as long as 15-25 years - we'll just have to wait and see...

Mama Glo Celebrates Her 80th Birthday

My mother, Mrs Gloria Flores vda. de Santiago (a retired Talakag Central Elementary School teacher), recently celebrated her 80th birthday in Talakag, Bukidnon. The big party was attended by members of her family, relatives and close friends; some of whom have even travelled all the way from England, Austria, USA, Bulacan, Antique, Bohol, Don Carlos, Malaybalay and Cagayan de Oro City.

“Happy 80th Birthday Mama Glo and may you have many more to come!”

Talakag, Bukidnon - My Home

There my heart, yearns to be
in far away, Bukidnon land
under its blue and starry skies
where love and joy never die.

When you think of Bukidnon, what springs to mind? We all have our own ideas. The word bukid means mountain. So it follows that the word bukidnon means full of mountains, mountainous, or highlands? Bukidnon is a province in the heart of Mindanao and is often called the highland paradise. The province of Bukidnon, of course, is more than just mountains. It is famous for the Kaamulan festival, the cattle and farming industry, being home to Del Monte’s pineapple plantation, and the second home of sugar centrals.

You couldn’t blame me for wanting to move back home to Talakag, Bukidnon. Just read the lyrics of the song above. It says it all. It’s a beautiful song, although I can’t remember who wrote or composed it.

We used to sing the song in our primary class every morning before starting our lessons. It was almost like the provincial anthem (next to Lupang Hinirang which is the national anthem). When I come to think about it now, we were perhaps indoctrinated into a sense of belonging and taking pride of our origin by our educators at that time. I wonder if the school children in Bukidnon still sing the same song these days. Do other provinces in Mindanao have their own song? I do not know - but it should be interesting to find out.

At that time, the song didn’t mean so much to me. Perhaps it’s true that you have to leave home in order to realise what you’re missing. Living and working abroad is challenging and life-enhancing but it’s not easy when you often long for your sweet Bukidnon home. This time I’ve put a lot of thought into each line of the song and recently started humming the tune again. I guess I’m just excited because my husband and I are moving back home to Talakag, Bukidnon soon. There is absolutely nowhere else we would rather be.
