TALAKAG - the etymology of which came from the Bisayan dialect LAKAG meaning "to go after” or
“follow in pursuit” and the prefix TA denoting “fondness in doing such”.
In other words, Talakag means “fondness in giving pursuit”.

If like me you're heading to Malaybalay for the Kaamulan 2015 Festival, it is very important to know when and where to go for the particular activities that you're interested in.  I am a regular Kaamulan visitor and I know my way about.  However, I must admit the change of some venues for the major events this year are worth noting!

Talakag, the Big Winner at Kaamulan 2014

Talakag bagged 2 major trophies during the Kaamulan 2014 Competition held in Malaybalay City, having won the following:

1st place for the Float Category
1st place for the Street Dancing Category
This achievement is very special as Talakag did not only beat all 21 contingents (usually there are only 7 competitors at the Kaamulan every year) but also won it during Bukidnon’s Centennial Year Celebrations.  This will certainly be recorded in our Talakagnon history.

Well done Talakag!

Kaamulan Rodeo 2012

Jim and I, together with our friends Andy and Cynthia, went to the Kaamulan 2012.  However, instead of watching the famous Ethnic Street Dancing on March 3, we decided to go a day later and watch the Rodeo Show for a change.

The last time I watched a Rodeo Show in Malaybalay was way back in the 70s.  The Grand Stand (the venue) was made of timber then and much of the surrounding area was grassland. So it’s no surprise that I couldn’t quite remember how to get to the Grand Stand this time that we have to stop and ask for directions.  We asked the very first person we saw along the main road who was dressed as a cowboy.  This cowboy turned out to be Mr Tony Guillermo who happened to be one of the Rodeo Judges.  It was a lucky coincidence as we then got invited to watch the show from the Judges’ Box.

It was interesting to see what the Rodeo’s like today.  The Grand Stand is now a concrete structure and the area surrounded by many houses.  The Competitors and Judges were dressed to impress in their finest cowboy attire.  Even some of the Organisers and Spectators made an effort to dress the part.  Del Monte was the Rodeo Sponsor for the Day and free-flowing pineapple juice was offered to the public the whole day from their kiosk.

The Rodeo Show took place in a fenced and dirt (or mud) surfaced arena.  Whilst there were other Rodeo events on the program, we only watched the Team-Roping event in particular.  Mr Guillermo explained to us that this is a timed-event with two cowboys on their horses chasing the calf.  The first cowboy ropes the head while the second cowboy ropes the legs.  A third cowboy then runs to the calf and flanks it on its side.  Today’s winning team did this in just under 23 seconds - I’m impressed!

I’ll definitely go back next year, complete with my cowboy hat and boots (or wellies), to watch more Rodeo events.

Higaonon, Umayamnon, and Tiguahanon)
in the capital Malaybalay City.
The Kaamulan 2012 held  its Grand Opening Ceremony today.  Check out the Schedule below to see which activities will interest you.  I've been to see the Ethnic Street Dancing in 2009 and 2010 so this time, for a change, I would like to watch the Rodeo.  See you there!

Talakag has a Booth at the Agri-Fair. If you get the chance, please drop in for some refreshing Carrot Juice.

Two Senators and a Governor

It’s not very often that one gets a chance to be in the company of two Senators and a Governor. So when you do, you make the most of it. At the recent Kaamulan Street Dancing Competition 2010 in Malaybalay City, we had the opportunity to watch the performance from the VIP Stage and get “up close and personal” with Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri and, his father, Bukidnon Governor Jose Ma. Zubiri and, their Guest of Honor, Senator Loren Legarda (Vice Presidential Candidate).

Governor Zubiri & Jim
When people all around you are talking about who is the best candidate, it can be confusing at times. So it pays to get to know as much as possible about as many candidates as you can and match them with your own personal criteria.

The fact that the Zubiris (LAKAS CMD KAMPI) and Legarda (Nacionalista) appeared side by side doesn’t surprise me. I don’t think it matters anymore what Party each candidate belongs to. Afterall, people nowadays vote for “the person” and not the Party.

In politics, loyalties can be switched easily in favour of self-interest. So voters pick and choose well and …..

MAY THE BEST CANDIDATE(S) WIN!

Kaamulan 2010 Update: Third Time Unlucky for Talakag

Last January, I wrote about Talakag’s preparations for the Kaamulan Festival 2010. As you may already know, Talakag has already placed 2nd twice in previous Kaamulan Ethnic Street Dancing competitions. Well last Saturday, we were in Malaybalay to watch them compete again. Sadly they’ve been unlucky in their third attempt. The competition was really tough and no matter how hard the Talakagnons tried, their best was just not enough (this time) from the judges’ perspective anyway.

However, let us not lose sight of what Kaamulan really stands for; the opportunity to “gather (and feast) with the seven hill tribes of Bukidnon”. After all, it’s the participation that counts and winning is just a bonus. Kaamulan 2010 has come and gone. So Talakagnons, don't despair. “Live to fight another day” and better luck next time.

I have posted some photos here to document all the preparations and VERY HARD WORK that the people behind the scenes and participants alike have gone through just to make it right on the Big Day.
